A Ghanaian couple living in New York was sentenced to prison for fatally assaulting their 5-year-old son.
Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae were found guilty on March 22, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. This was over three years after Owusu's son King was discovered dead in a Brentwood, New York, house.
District Attorney Raymond Tierney stated in a press statement, "This little boy was beaten and suffered for days at the hands of these defendants, one of whom was his own mother, until he unfortunately succumbed to his severe and extensive injuries."
Tierney went on with her statement:
"The defendants have been held accountable for this horrific crime thanks to the thorough investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department, the prosecutors' unwavering pursuit of justice in this case, and the jury's careful consideration of the evidence presented."
According to the allegations, Owusu and Addae allegedly beat the youngster for three days in 2021 using "at least four different instruments."
The boy's health continued to worsen, and eventually he passed out.
Prosecutors alleged that Owusu and Addae did not give King medical attention or dial 911.
The boy was taken to a family member's home on April 1, 2021, where Addae and Owusu left him.
King was discovered dead, according to the prosecution, when the family member got home.
Authorities found that the boy had multiple injuries.
