Aspiring students sometimes struggle to figure out what they can study in the tertiary institution. Gone are the days when they are told to choose what they have passion for, that is dead now. You need to choose what is of relevance to the society because most courses are not.
Think long term, not just what you will enjoy doing in the present.

It is sad that in Nigerian universities, especially the competitive ones, they usually end up giving candidates the course they didn't apply for. That has killed many dreams of students.

That is undoubtedly sad, @jonaville . Every student should have the right to choose the course that they dreamed of having so that they will not be discouraged and work even harder to achieve their dreams in life. This is one of the many reasons why students are not motivated to study since they do not like their course.

While I agree with the original poster that you have to choose what is relevant to the society to study, I also believe that in this 21st century, anything and everything you study has a potential to make you money and huge one at that provided you are dedicated enough to master that field and also know how to monetize that particular field of study.

Unless Industries change their way of thinking students have to aspire to attain degrees regardless of whether they have an aptitude in subjects that they have chosen. Getting admissions in colleges is the biggest headache even if one wants to make choices depending on their aptitude and os they grab whatever comes their way

Industries should change their way of thinking and look for those who have the aptitude and not who have attained degrees in areas where they have no aptitude.

You know most times many youths usually find it difficult to do the right thing before going to school. Most of them are not going to school for the right reason, imagine someone going to school without a particular discipline in mind, just ready to study whatever course he/she is given, that's more like a bad foundation. A student should at least have a course of choice, and it must be something he/she is passionate about.
