What is considered ethical when collecting emails?

Always respect the privacy and wishes of your subscribed customers in gathering their emails for marketing. Obtain permission from the people whose email messages you will send out by collecting their emails using opt-in forms on your website, in-store sign-up sheets, and in other ways.

Always state how you will use their email addresses and always give them an option to opt out or unsubscribe at any time. Be transparent with your data practices, and ensure the legitimate use is fully aligned with the law—CAN-SPAM Act or GDPR.

DO NOT buy or rent email lists. They will bring you nothing but unqualified leads, spam complaints, and ruin your sender reputation. Build your email list in organic ways that give value and incentivize to draw people who are truly interested in your content or offerings. All this will occur if, as an authentic email marketer, you bring in transparency, consent, and respect for subscriber choices.
